Communist Party of India (Marxist) | CPI(M)

The CPI(M) came into frame at the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of India held in Calcutta from October 31,1964 to November 7, 1964. The CPI(M) was formed in the scuffle against modification and sectarianism in the communist movement at the national and international level, in order to protect the technical and radical doctrines of Marxism-Leninism and its suitable presentation in the concrete Indian situations. The CPI(M) combines the fine inheritance of the anti-imperialist fight and the innovative tradition of the undivided Communist Party which was originated in 1920. Over the years, the Party has arose as the leading Left force in the country.

In the last few elections, competing on an average 15 percent of the over-all seats, the CPI(M) has been receiving around 5-6 percent of the votes. In the 2009 elections to the Lok Sabha, the CPI(M) won 16 seats. In Tripura, the CPI(M) was first voted to office in 1977. Though it lost the subsequent election due to largescale ropes, in all elections since 1988 it has been voted to office. Though irregular, the CPI(M) has image in eight state legislative assemblies.
